Compelling , starts you thinking !! Organ need and methods of obtaining and or growing from stem cells , has always fascinated me , I'm a retired nurse and worked 35 years in the hospital . It's been the subject of many a conversation over the years. A subject that touches most people, a loved or yourself. The author brings some possibilities and methods to mind that are very real and not spoken about socially when the need arises .
I'm not going to be critical as to content , style and other nit picking subjects. All I know is that lm enjoying the characters , story line and ease of read. It has made me aware of this author and I am a fan !! I love mysteries , preferably fast moving, lots of twists and turns !! Now I can add Mr Van Anderson to my list of authors !! The Organ Takers A Novel of Surgical Suspense The McBride Trilogy Book 1 edition by Richard Van Anderson Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

This book captivated my attention from start to finish. The subject matter and setting were both of great interest to me as I am both a New Yorker and a medical professional. I felt the author really captured the cold stinging New York winters. I also felt myself being transport along my old stomping grounds of the lower Eastside. The subway scene was a particular favorite.

The medical terminology really made me feel a sense of added suspense and intensity as David Mc Bride struggled each step of the way. I particularly liked Turnbull and his type A , narcissistic personality. A personality often found in Hospitals nationwide.

I also felt this author did a good job in creating characters who were believable. I tried to put myself In David Mc Brides shoes as well as Turnbulls shoes. Each character having their strengths and weaknesses which we could likely all identify with at some points in our lives. You have to ask yourself "what would I have done under those circumstances". Self preservation at its finest!

I think the follow up books will be welcomed by those who appreciate medical thrillers. I am personally looking forward to the sequel novel.
Absolutely loved this thriller, chock full of medical information! The subject of organ stealing for greed is treated with jaw-clenching horror. David McBride, the main character, is so completely misguided but well-intentioned, you just want to grab his lapel and shake some sense into him. The accompanying online glossary to the book, complete with graphic photos and illustrations is a huge bonus. This is one book I couldn't put down (I know that's a commonly used phrase, but it's true in this case) and I can't wait for the sequels in the trilogy. I want to see way more from this author!
I have read many medical thrillers - they are one of my favorite genres - but this one felt a bit predictable and dull. It was meant to be suspenseful but it never really got off the ground. I found myself speed-reading to get through it, instead of being intrigued by what would happen next. The author is spot-on on his medical jargon and procedures, but just didn't build any tension. I am a heavy-duty reader, so if a book doesn't grab me right off the bat, I usually don't bother plowing through it. This one had an interesting premise but was ultimately disappointing and predictable.
I love to read medical mystery books and this one wIas fantastic. There was some medical info but it wasn't difficult to understand. I've read some that have so medical terminology it confusing.
The author has written another book which continues the story of the main character. I just purchased it.
I really enjoyed this book, and read it in one sitting. I took off one star because of the use of certain swear words that are offensive to me. (GD)

Some spoilers in this review
The main character is not always likable, the wife is a whiner, and the bad guy is really, really bad. Lots of diversity in personality types. The main character lives in one of the worst parts of NYC after losing his medical license, and he and his wife are bitter. After things finally start to look up, he gets caught up in a plot to help an unknown bad guy harvest kidneys illegally. The bad guy is a brilliant scientist who can't get more money for his company so turns to the black market selling kidneys. The morality (or lack of) of what he is doing is the basis of the story, and follows the main character's quest to get out of the deal, and how this changes his personality.
I enjoy medical thrillers, having worked in the field for many years. The author does use a lot of technical terms throughout the book which may bother some people, but I appreciated his obvious knowledge of medicine. The plot is interesting and I’d like to believe that it is ultimately possible with today’s technology. My only criticism is that the characters are lacking in depth so I really didn’t care what happened to them that much. This is a decent beach book. Nothing earth-shattering, but entertaining.
I was really looking forward to reading this book. I thought an expose of the black market in organs for transplant would be fascinating. However, I found the narrator to be flippant, self-centered, and alone by choice. His whole life was about making money. Helping people was an unintended consequence. He did change as the book approached the finish, but I already did not care for this man, even though he sort of redeems himself in the end. His afterword, with several suggestions for increasing the number of organ donors, was the best part of the book.
