Josiah Foxglove is given a second chance when he takes over his family's spread in the shadow of the Snowy Range. A veteran of the Gulf War, he came back broken in body and spirit.
Marcus Colton buried his long-time lover and best friend three years ago. Lonely and still grieving, Marcus finds solace in protecting Petilune, a pretty girl with learning difficulties, who will surely become a victim of abuse and neglect without his help. But that doesn't help him get through the long, dark nights.
When violence wracks the small community of Centurion, WY, it's easy to place blame on Petilune's mysterious new boyfriend, Ojibwe teen Kit Golden Eagle. It looks open and shut, but for Josiah and Marcus the facts simply don't add up.
Something's rotten in Centurion, something that smacks of a hate crime....
The Eagle and the Fox A Snowy Range Mystery Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Nya Rawlyns Nick J Russo PubRight Manuscript Services Books
With The Eagle and The Fox, the first in a series of Snowy Range mysteries, Nya Rawlyns has done it again. Those of us who know her work aren’t surprised at the fact that she’s created an intriguing world peopled with solid and engaging characters who grab our interest immediately and refuse to let go even after “The End.” We aren’t surprised at the depth of even the minor characters, nor at the heat of desire that sizzles off the page. We’re not surprised by Rawlyns’ refusal to wave tropes in front of us and hope we don’t notice. What we’re surprised at is the ease with which she dances over genre boundaries. Josiah Foxglove and Marcus Colton find themselves embroiled in finding the solution to several crimes in small town Wyoming, and there is plenty of criminal/investigative action. They also find themselves drawn warily to one another in deeply intimate ways, and there is plenty of sexual/romantic tension between them. In the midst of all this, they’re united by a deep concern for an emotionally challenged teenage girl and the dangerous young man she’s falling for, and there is plenty of subtle fodder for thought along social justice lines contained in the book as well.
Classifying The Eagle and The Fox as one genre or another is difficult, and likely the attempt is a waste of time. Simply buy the book and begin to read, setting aside notions of what kind of story it will be, and allow it to be the story it is instead. Rawlyns isn’t a genre-writer. She doesn’t simply push the boundaries of genre expectations; she runs them over with a tank. She isn’t a romance writer. She isn’t a mystery writer. She isn’t a dark urban fantasy writer. She isn’t a western writer. She transcends genre, blending them with apparently effortless ease. She is, to coin a term, genre-queer, pigeon-holed into none, owning them all.

The Eagle and the Fox A Snowy Range Mystery Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Nya Rawlyns Nick J Russo PubRight Manuscript Services Books Reviews
I found a certain joy when reading this book. There really is a difference in writing styles from one author to the next and Nya has such a beautiful way with words that I have to call this book literary fiction. What sets literary fiction apart from other books? Literary fiction to me is when an author can layer characteristics of their characters and subtle layering to the landscape that brings out a certain roundness if you will. A roundness that let’s me the reader feel as if I am looking at the actions, as I read the words they are turned into a picture in my mind. I may sound like I am out of my mind to some of you but I found myself sucked into an offbeat and ultimately poignant story.
Offbeat, not in your usually quirky way but in a mature way. Josiah and Marcus are both mature men, Josiah returns from war scarred and Marcus suffers from the loss of his love now gone. Centurion is a town of only a couple hundred people setting at the foot of the Snowy Range. Picture this, a small town with a handful of businesses and most likely not a stop light anywhere, a community that helps one another and knows everyone’s business, this is Centurion. In a town so small staying hidden about your sexuality is a given, so Nya set up a beautiful dance between Josiah and Marcus, testing the boundaries of closeness. This slow simmer felt real and I really appreciated the way the relationship was written.
Poignant, if you look poignant up in the dictionary you come up with touching, moving, sad, affecting, heart-rending….plus a few more. This sums up the emotions that this story takes you on. Poignant for me also means important. This goes back to what I first talked about, how Nya brings a rounded story. Nya doesn’t leave a stone unturned, she doesn’t rush a scene, it is carefully laid out and then brought to life.
There is murder, kidnapping and people getting beat up, the book is an Action Adventure that blends an impoverished community against a group that will try and take away the innocence of the young.
I thought of this the other day. You know how comfortable a warm bubble bath can be, how relaxing? It is kind of weird but I’m going to use that bubble bath as an analogy for this book. Just like a bubble bath where you can relax in the serenity and comfort of the bubbles, you will want to stay within the words of The Eagle and The Fox in the same way. The same way you feel when the water gets cold and you get cranky because you have to drain the tub. You get that same feeling when you come to The End, you just want to stay in the words and not have to pull the plug and shut the cover. Find it all on GGR-Review dot com.
I love reading Nya's books. Want more of them. There is a few writers that i keep a watch for new books each week. Nya is one of them
I don't really like gay romances, but this one was really good. And the romance between the two men was special, and believable. The whole story line was real good.
Nya Rawlyns is an amazing writer and story teller. This was the first book of hers that I've read. She is very talented with words, imagery, emotions... The book has mystery, love, tension. I really enjoyed it and will read more of her books.
