One of my favorite authors because of his imagination and humor. Very off beat and funny. I spread his books out because they are powerful and can be psychologically intoxicating leaving me a little down. But, the trip is well worth it. I am careful to warn people and I don't recommend to friends who are struggling and are vulnerable.Product details

The Front Seat Passenger (Audible Audio Edition) Pascal Garnier Luke Thompson Gallic Books Books Reviews
I think that it is probably a given that I am an ardent admirer of the work of the late, lamented Pascal Garnier, with his small, yet perfectly formed, dark slices of fiction that always put the less savoury aspects of the human psyche so succinctly under the microscope.
As you can see from the synopsis, the premise is simple enough, with a man discovering the infidelity of his wife, and her death occuring in the company of her lover. However, in the spirit of Garnier’s twisted and grimly humorous style, does Fabien merely retreat into a wave of self-pity and grief from the discovery of this affair? No- he seeks retribution by pursuing Martine, the widow of his wife’s lover, and what we bear witness to is a man that is entirely disengaged with the emotions of grief, and hellbent on his own twisted motives for revenge. With his Machiavellian plotting to woo Martine, and extricate her from the overbearing influence of her best friend Madeleine, Garnier produces some singularly absurd moments, that have you laughing and cringing in equal measure. However, this being a trademark example of the grim and disconcerting narratives that Garnier produces, the tables are swiftly turned on the scheming Fabien in a truly surprising fashion.
It is this ability of Garnier to insert the ridiculous and the horrific in fairly normal aspects of life and turns of events that set him so far apart from his contemporaries. His books are slim, but contain an expansive scope of the deepest and most dislikeable characteristics of his protagonists, but not so far removed that they do not strike some sort of chord or recognition from his readers. By focusing on the essential and most destructive aspects of human emotions and employing his style of writing, the familiar is made familiar, where we can recognise our own emotions, but also unfamilliar in the way that his protagonists deal with, and react to, these emotions. Thus, the absurd situations that arise are merely an extension of how some people would react in situations like these, but taken to a whole new existential level, in an effort to resonate with the natural wit and intelligence of his readers. The ordinary is made extraordinary, and our reading pleasure is amplified because of this, punctuated as it is by moments of dark humour, and moral revulsion.
Alluding to the writing style of Garnier himself, these are slim works of genius and little more needs to be said. Fin
Another new to me author and one who is sadly no longer with us. French author Garnier died in March 2010. Gallic Books have so far published 5 of Garnier’s short slices of French noir, with a sixth The Islanders due out in November of this year. Thanks to Jose - The Game's Afoot (The Panda Theory review) and Sarah at Crimepieces (The Front Seat Passenger review) for bringing Garnier to my attention.
There’s a lot to like with this book. It’s short – always a plus in my reading world, dark and a little bit disturbing. I was reminded of a Stephen King book and film at one point when Garnier turned the plot on its head. I won’t name check the book because it may reveal a bit too much about things and I wouldn’t want to go spoiling things for anyone.
We have an interesting main character, Fabien. Someone who I was rooting for without ever actually liking him. He’s a bit too passive and lethargic to actually feel any great sympathy for him. He has a strange, uncomfortable relationship with his father and only one good friend in his life.
We have a couple of strong females, Madeleine and Sylvie. Neither are particularly likeable and warming, though they’re perhaps a lot more interesting because of this. No family with the demise of Sylvie’s husband and only each other, until Fabien unwittingly engineers an introduction.
Great set-up, great twist, touches of humour and dispassionate violence. Odd characters, with their own secrets and hang-ups and foibles.
Verdict – quirky and unlike anything I have read for a while.
5 from 5.
Always one to impulsively stockpile books ahead of sampling an author,
How’s the Pain, The A26, Moon in a Dead Eye and The Panda Theory are all waiting for me. I don't think I will be regretting my pre-emptive purchasing!
Grateful thanks to Emily at Gallic for my copy of this.
Juicy thriller with many twists and turns.
In precise and effective prose, Mr. Garnier tells a story with no heros and a good deal of bloodshed. This is a fine piece of noir fiction and I greatly enjoyed reading it. I suspect I'll end up reading all of his books, which appear to be short in length but overflowing with terrific plotting and wonderful writing.
addictive... once you pick it up you won't be able to put it down. dark, funny, honest, raw... love it.
This was my second Garnier book to read, having read "How's the Pain?" and really enjoyed it. The plot relates how the main character, after finding out that his wife was killed in a car crash with her lover, seeks out a relationship with the lover's wife. After that, it gets even stranger! The book tells the story in a matter-of-fact but menacing manner that is quite compelling. The ending ( which I won't give away) was slightly weak, but overall, a very entertaining and stimulating read
I love that I have discovered this author. Very interesting short stories!
One of my favorite authors because of his imagination and humor. Very off beat and funny.
